In the aftermath of the Metrolink accident, there are indications the engineer was text messaging and missed a signal and thereby caused the horrific fatal accident. What is Ace doing to prevent such an accident? How many people are at the controls? Is there a back-up person in the event of heart-attack, fainting or missing a signal due to operator error?

Jay,

Thank you for your comments and concerns regarding the safety of ACE trains. ACE has very stringent guidelines concerning the use of cell phones during train operations. In particular the operator of the train is not permitted to have a cell phone on their person or turned on while in control of the train. This is monitored regularly during routine observations of employee work duties.

Concerning a back up person each train has two qualified engineers on board the train. The Operator and Attendant must communicate all signals as they are passed. The train has controls that will automatically stop the train if the engineer stops responding for any reason.
